Summer Term News

2011 - 2012 Posted on Tue, August 07, 2012 22:36:52

Celebrations all round!

As I write, the summer term has ended and another school year has been completed. There were many things to celebrate this term, including the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, which was a truly wonderful occasion for the whole country, capturing the sense of gratitude and thankfulness to our Queen, and a pride in our country.

As a Prayer Group, we, like many groups around the country, celebrated the event and held a Diamond Jubilee Coffee Morning, not only to celebrate the Queen’s 60 years on the throne but also to raise funds for one of our local playgroups, Roseacre, whilst promoting our Prayer Group. We enjoyed a beautifully sunny morning (something of a rarity this summer!) and invited our guests to indulge in coffee and cupcakes, partake of the delicacies on the Cake Stall and have fun on the Prize Every Time Stall. It was a hugely successful morning with £200 being raised for the playgroup to use on developing their play/garden area.

These delicious cakes were made by 5 year old Olivia,

daughter of one of our members.

It was our joy and delight to present the staff of Roseacre Playgroup with the cheque for £200 when we spent a morning there in July, sharing with the children about being special. We reflected on all that had happened during the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, making flags, sharing a story, songs and prayers.

Book Donations

We had great pleasure in donating Scripture Union books to our junior schools again, this year placing 210 copies of the ‘Get Ready Go’ publication for the incoming Reception children and 211 copies of ‘It’s Your Move’ publication for the outgoing Year 6 children.

Whilst making our annual visit to St. Ignatius School for our meeting in their beautiful Prayer Garden, we presented Mr. Tom Ready, Deputy Head, with their books.

Sadly (for us!) we have said goodbye this term to several of our prayer contacts: Kate Waters, Head Teacher at Littleton, Carole Martin, Office Manager at Saxon, and David Henderson at Halliford.

We wish these dear friends God’s blessing for their futures and thank them for their support and faithfulness to the Prayer Group over many years. It has been greatly appreciated and we couldn’t have done it without their input.

for her tremendous support of our group

…..and finally!

We were so encouraged to receive the following from one of our prayer contacts when we met for our final meeting of the academic year – what an encouragement!

‘My only prayer this time is that each of you in the prayer group will be very blessed for the time you have given in prayer for us all. I am so very grateful to each person.

Thank you so much.’

Enjoy the summer (hope you catch the sun at some point!) and we’ll be in touch in September.

Spring Term

2011 - 2012 Posted on Tue, April 10, 2012 21:57:04

An encouraging term!

Our Prayer Group continues to meet fortnightly to pray for 2 playgroups and 12 schools in the Shepperton and Sunbury area. We receive the prayer requests via some wonderful people who have offered to be our contacts in the schools. We believe God has revealed to us something of His heart for the school children, their families and their teachers, and in obedience we count it a privilege and joy to pray. We have been delighted to receive some most encouraging comments from our contacts:

‘THANK YOU again for your prayer support. Couldn’t do what we do without you doing what you do!’

‘I count the Prayer Group as my guardian; being a Head can be lonely sometimes, so it is reassuring to know that you are thinking of my welfare too. Thank you very much.’

‘Thank you so much for the prayers of the group, I am so blessed by your support.’

Thank you for all your support. Years ago I just used to ignore the prayer group. Little did I know how life would change!’

‘I can’t express enough how grateful I am to all of you in the prayer group for the AMAZING support in prayer and encouragement you have given me. I know my job is only possible as I am supported by prayer! We’re a team!’

Where’s Woolly?

What a great time we had at Roseacre Playgroup at the end of term, sharing the story of the Lost Sheep, and emphasizing how special and precious each of us are to Jesus – the Good Shepherd. We had a lot of fun getting stuck up with glue and cotton wool (!) and thoroughly enjoyed the time with our very special friends we have made. We plan to return during the summer term.

Coming up

The summer term will undoubtedly be as busy as ever with SAT’s, exams, various trips, sports days, as well as the end of year concerts. As a group, we plan to donate two Scripture Union publications to five of our infant and junior schools, having raised funds during the year, including from a car boot sale and our stall at Chennestone School’s Christmas Fair. We also intend to donate to our senior schools copies of a special ‘Olympic Sports’ edition of a daily devotional for teenagers.

2011 - 2012 Posted on Wed, December 21, 2011 21:46:59

Christmas is fast approaching and 2012 is drawing to a close, and we look back with thanks for the way God has proved His faithfulness and provision to us once again.

Books for Schools

With funds raised during the year, including a Royal Wedding Afternoon Tea event, it was our very great pleasure to be able to donate 404 Scripture Union books during the summer term to Chennestone, Littleton, Saxon, Springfield & St. Ignatius Schools.

Thelma, Head Teacher of Springfield, ‘retired’ after 32 years dedicated service to the school. We have greatly appreciated Thelma’s input as prayer contact for the school and wish her a safe and happy time in the voluntary work she undertakes in Uganda in 2012.

Summer Term

We enjoyed our annual visits to St. Ignatius School Prayer Garden in June although we were ‘rained’ off on this occasion and headed for a spare classroom.

We very much enjoyed the end of year Concert at Saxon School in July entitled ‘Pirates of the Curry Bean’- it was hilarious and extremely well performed.

New Autumn Term

Our meetings resumed and a most encouraging e-mail had been received:

‘My husband, 2 year old son and I are viewing houses in the area this week from Aberdeen, Scotland and I was really encouraged to find your website… All the best with your prayer group, fantastic work!’

Our fundraising for next year’s books began in October with a Car Boot Sale where we were very pleased to raise £100.

In November we were delighted to be invited to have our meeting at St. Paul’s Catholic College and were privileged to be joined by Father Ray Lyon (Chaplain) and Matthew Dell (Head of R.E.). Our morning was made even more pleasurable when we were asked to join the staff for coffee and cakes!

December 2nd was a very busy day for our group with the morning spent at Roseacre Playgroup where we shared the Christmas story and made crowns with the children. We love visiting our friends there where we always receive such a warm welcome. We hope to return in the New Year. Later the same day we were in action at Chennestone School, manning our ‘Prize Every Time’ staff at their Christmas Fair for further fundraising for next year’s books. We were overwhelmed by the number of ‘customers’ and sold out of over 300 prizes in an hour-and-a-hour. An exhausting but well-rewarding day!

Our year ended by attending one of our favourite annual events – the Christmas Play at Manor Mead School, this year the children sharing with us the ‘Colours of Christmas’. Once again, the children amazed us with their wonderful performance.

A very happy and blessed Christmas to you all.
